My dad just wanted to walk again.

My father's name is Arnaud.

When he was younger, he walked the Tour du Mont Blanc. 170 kilometres, ten days on foot. The kind of thing you're still telling people about thirty years later.

When he retired, he wanted to do it again. But by then, arthritis had settled into his feet. After a few kilometres, the blisters would start. By the end of the day, he had to stop.

He tried brand after brand. None of them lasted past 15 kilometres.

And I watched my father give up.

We searched. For a long time.

The idea that wouldn't leave us: find the socks that would get him walking again. And walk beside him.

Blisters come from three things: moisture, friction between the toes, and slipping inside the boot.

I came across socks with five separated toes. Used by trail runners, but not one of them was truly designed for long-distance hiking.

For over a year, I tested prototypes. Arnaud wore them on his tracks. He told me what rubbed, where it pinched.

One morning he came back from an 18-kilometre walk: "They're good. You can sell them."
